Netflix Unveils Avicii – I’m Tim, a Deep Dive into the Life of the EDM Icon
New, unseen footage of Avicii has been released alongside the debut of the Netflix documentary Avicii – I’m Tim, now available on the streaming platform. The film captures the journey of the Swedish DJ and producer Tim Bergling, who became a global EDM sensation before tragically passing away in 2018 at just 28 years old. The documentary, created with the support of his parents, offers a moving portrait of the man behind the music.
A Personal and Honest Story
Director Henrik Burman explained his emotional connection to the project in an interview with Billboard, saying, “When I decided it would be his voice narrating this story, I thought maybe this was my way of staying close to him. Maybe this is how I could meet him again.”
Burman sifted through countless hours of archival footage, searching for insights into Bergling’s character and artistic genius. “Tim would say things like, ‘If there’s ever a documentary about me, we need to talk about alcohol. We need to talk about the bad parts of my life.’ I listened to hours of his voice, trying to piece together who Tim was as a person and who Avicii was as an extraordinary artist.”
Family Reflections and Heartbreaking Loss
Tim’s father, Klas Bergling, opened up about his grief, telling the BBC, “I miss him every minute. Of course, we talked every day. But sometimes I admit, I get angry with him. Why did you do it? Why did you leave us?”
Shortly after Tim’s passing, his family released a statement that reflected his inner struggles:
“Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions. A perfectionist who worked and traveled at an intense pace that led to extreme stress. When he stopped touring, he wanted to find balance in life to be happy and to keep doing what he loved most: making music.
Tim struggled with thoughts about life and its meaning, about happiness. He couldn’t go on anymore. He wanted peace. Tim wasn’t made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shied away from the spotlight. Tim, you will be forever loved and missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive.”
Unreleased Music and Legacy
In the weeks leading up to his passing, Avicii worked on new music, including sessions with songwriter/producer Joe Janiak in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, fans were treated to a new remix of Beautiful Drug, a track Avicii had worked on nine years ago for the Zac Brown Band.
