Snoop Dogg Confronts Life, Legacy, and Loyalty on New Album “Iz It a Crime?”
Hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg is back with his 21st solo studio album, Iz It a Crime?, released May 14 via Death Row Records and Gamma. Marking over 30 years of cultural impact, the 21-track project reflects the Doggfather’s enduring versatility, vulnerability, and voice in rap.
Packed with guest appearances from Pharrell Williams, Wiz Khalifa, Sexyy Red, October London, Jane Handcock, and Charlie Bereal, Iz It a Crime? offers a textured sonic journey. Producers like Battlecat, Nottz, and Rick Rock help craft a soundscape that moves between introspection and swagger. The title track cleverly samples Sade’s classic “Is It a Crime,” recontextualizing it in Snoop’s world of street wisdom and personal loss.
This album isn’t just another flex—it’s catharsis set to beat. Songs like “My Friend” honor late family members including his mother and brother, while “Can’t Get Enough” is a love letter to his wife, Shante Broadus. “Life’s Journey” digs deep into Snoop’s reflective mindset as he enters a new artistic chapter. And then there’s “ShutYoBitchAssUp,” where Snoop fires back at former Death Row boss Suge Knight, responding to renewed public tension.
In a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Snoop described himself no longer as “just a rapper” but as a true musician, defying industry-imposed expiration dates. “If you a musician, you can make music until you die,” he said.
The album’s rollout includes an accompanying extended visual piece, blending music videos, documentary footage, and Olympic moments, reinforcing the album’s hybrid storytelling concept. Following the Death Row gospel compilation Altar Call and his December collab Missionary with Dr. Dre, Iz It a Crime? continues Snoop’s prolific 2025 run.
