Electronic Music Legend and Get Physical Founder Dies at 55

Philipp Jung Passes Away: Global Dance Community Mourns the Get Physical Co-Founder

The global electronic music community is reeling from the sudden loss of Philipp Jung, who has passed away at the age of 55. A visionary producer, taste-maker, and co-founder of the seminal Berlin imprint Get Physical Music, Jung was an foundational architect of the mid-2000s house and tech-house movement. A close source confirmed the heartbreaking news to Electronic Groove. While no cause of death has been disclosed, the news comes as a profound shock to friends and fans alike. Jung had recently relocated to the tranquil shores of Costa Rica, embracing a healthy lifestyle and eagerly preparing to become a father for the first time.

Jung’s journey began long before he dominated global DJ booths. Working diligently in A&R roles throughout the 1990s, he developed a razor-sharp ear for sonic trends. In 2002, alongside his childhood friend Patrick Bodmer, DJ T. (Thomas Koch), and the duo Booka Shade (Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier), he launched Get Physical Music in Berlin.

What followed altered the trajectory of modern dance music. The label championed a muscular, highly rhythmic, yet deeply melodic and song-driven approach to electronic music. This unique sonic signature bridged the gap between sweaty underground dancefloors and home listening environments, earning Get Physical the prestigious “Label of the Year” title from DJ Magazine in 2005.

As one half of the iconic duo M.A.N.D.Y. alongside Bodmer, Jung co-created some of the era’s most indelible club anthems. Tracks like “Tonite” and the monumental 2005 collaboration with Booka Shade, “Body Language”—widely cited as one of the greatest electronic tracks of the century—defined the sleek, infectious minimalism of the decade.

Even after stepping back from grueling tour schedules in 2018 to focus on his well-being, Jung’s creative engine never stalled. He poured his soul into nurturing deeper, atmospheric sounds via Get Physical’s sister imprint Kindisch, and pushed experimental boundaries with his album-focused platform METAPHYSICAL. Just months ago, he curated the Rewind Forward Vol. 1 compilation, unearthing forgotten gems from the label’s rich catalog. He also delivered what has now tragically become his final published DJ mix for When We Dip Magazine.

The music world has lost a gentle, hilarious, and pioneering giant whose enduring passion for electronic culture will continue to echo through dancefloors for generations to come.
