The xx “Next Chapter” Begins: Every Solo Hit and Surprise in Their Reunion

The xx Reclaim the Stage with Emotional Mexico City Reunion

The wait is finally over. For eight years, the haunting interplay between Romy Madley Croft’s guitar and Oliver Sim’s bass, anchored by Jamie xx’s architectural beats, existed only in our playlists. On Friday night, at a packed Pepsi Center WTC in Mexico City, The xx return became a reality, marking the official start of what the band calls their “next chapter.”

This wasn’t just a nostalgia trip; it was a masterful synthesis of three artists who have evolved significantly since 2017’s I See You. Appearing backlit against a hazy, atmospheric stage, the trio delivered a 19-song odyssey that bridged the gap between their minimalist indie roots and their recent explorations into club culture and avant-pop.

A Career-Spanning Setlist and Solo Synergy

The energy in Mexico City was electric as the band opened with the icy, iconic riffs of “Crystalised.” While the core of the set leaned on the melancholic brilliance of their three studio albums—xx, Coexist, and I See You—the real magic happened when the group integrated their solo successes.

The setlist functioned as a unified vision of the members’ individual journeys. We saw the trio tackle Romy’s euphoric dance anthem “Enjoy Your Life,” Oliver Sim’s sophisticated “GMT,” and Jamie xx’s floor-filling “Loud Places.” A standout moment was the performance of “Waited All Night,” a highlight from Jamie’s 2025 masterpiece In Waves, featuring both Romy and Oliver. It served as a powerful reminder that while they have flourished apart, their chemistry remains unparalleled.

The Road Ahead: Festivals and New Music

This residency in Mexico City is merely the prologue. The band is set to headline major global stages in 2026, including Coachella, Primavera Sound, and Lollapalooza. With rumors of a new album in the works since 2023 and fresh studio footage recently shared by the band, the “next chapter” isn’t just about looking back—it’s about the future of indie-electronic music.
