The Riff Lord rides again. More than two decades after his acclaimed 2005 release Fused, Black Sabbath pioneer Tony Iommi has officialized his long-awaited return. His brand-new solo record, titled From the Dark, arrives on October 23 via BMG. The announcement comes paired with a cinematic video for lead single “World Alone,” offering heavy music fans their first taste of Iommi’s signature down-tuned crunch in years.
Tony Iommi ‘From the Dark’ Album Details and Queen Collaboration
For From the Dark, Iommi joined forces with power-house Norwegian metal vocalist Jørn Lande, who co-wrote the album’s material. Production duties were handled by Iommi alongside his trusted, long-time studio collaborator Mike Exeter. Rounding out the powerhouse recording line-up are bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil.
Adding extra star power to the tracklist, Queen guitar hero and close personal friend Brian May contributes a guest guitar solo on the track “Death Wake”—promising an unforgettable duel between two of rock’s most celebrated tone architects.
A New Chapter After Black Sabbath and the Loss of Ozzy
From the Dark marks Iommi’s first standalone solo project following Black Sabbath’s final farewell performance and the deeply felt passing of founding frontman Ozzy Osbourne. Reflecting on navigating this new era, Iommi opened up about the emotional weight of moving forward:
“It’s been really strange. I still don’t feel like he’s gone because when I look on YouTube or whatever, there’s something to do with Ozzy, and I see him again and again. It’s almost like he’s still here. It’s really peculiar. Only, we were in touch so many times. That’s what I miss.”
Rather than trying to chase past glory or reinvent the wheel, Iommi approaches this milestone with refreshing clarity and purpose. “It’s an album we’ve really enjoyed making,” he notes. “We’re not trying to prove anything.”
“World Alone”: A Dystopian Retro-Futuristic Lead Single
The lead single “World Alone” delivers everything fans crave: soaring vocals from Lande layered over massive, ironclad riffs. Director Ryan Mackfall directed the accompanying music video, setting the track in a retrofuturistic dystopian universe where the main character battles for survival inside an immersive video game world.
