In the glitzy world of entertainment, names are everything. But for Taylor Swift, her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, has hit a major legal roadblock. Las Vegas entertainer Maren Wade (legal name Maren Flagg) has officially filed a federal lawsuit in Los Angeles, claiming the pop icon’s new era infringes on a brand Wade has meticulously built over the last decade: “Confessions of a Showgirl.”
This isn’t just a minor dispute over a similar phrase. According to the filing, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) had already issued a warning shot, reportedly denying Swift’s attempt to register the title due to a “likelihood of confusion” with Wade’s existing trademark.
A Decade of “Confessions” vs. a Global Juggernaut
Maren Wade is no stranger to the spotlight. Since 2014, she has utilized the “Confessions of a Showgirl” brand for a popular Las Vegas Weekly column, a podcast, and a successful live cabaret show. She officially secured the federal trademark in 2015.
The lawsuit argues that Swift’s marketing—which includes hashtags like #LifeOfAShowgirl and #TS12—directly overlaps with Wade’s established market. Wade’s legal team, led by Jaymie Parkkinen, contends that the sheer scale of Swift’s “Showgirl” branding is “overwhelming” the original mark, leading fans to believe that Wade is the one imitating the pop star, rather than the originator of the concept.
”Maren spent more than a decade building this brand,” Parkkinen told Rolling Stone. “Trademark law exists so that creators of all levels can protect what they have built, regardless of the size of the opponent.”
The “Smoking Gun” in the USPTO
The most compelling evidence in Wade’s favor appears to be a November 2025 finding by the USPTO. When Swift’s team, via TAS Rights Management, attempted to register The Life of a Showgirl, the office issued a partial refusal. The reason? It shared the same “dominant phrase” and structure as Wade’s mark. Despite this, the lawsuit alleges that Swift’s camp proceeded with a massive global merchandise launch and promotional campaign without seeking a license or agreement.
As the case moves to federal court, Swift and UMG Recordings face a difficult choice: fight a “reverse confusion” claim in front of a jury or settle with the Las Vegas performer who had the “Showgirl” title first.
