Foo Fighters Strip It Back: ‘Caught in the Echo’ and the Ghost of 1995

Get loud

The Foo Fighters are currently navigating a fascinating paradox: they are one of the biggest stadium acts on the planet, yet their creative compass is pointing straight back to Dave Grohl’s garage. With the release of their latest single, “Caught in the Echo,” the band provides the clearest glimpse yet into their upcoming album, Your Favorite Toy, arriving April 24.

The Raw Evolution of ‘Your Favorite Toy’ and Ilan Rubin

The new track follows “Asking for a Friend” and the title track, solidifying a sound that guitarist Chris Shiflett claims wouldn’t feel out of place on their self-titled 1995 debut. This isn’t just nostalgia; it’s a structural reset. After the tragic loss of Taylor Hawkins and the transitional period with Josh Freese, the band has officially integrated Ilan Rubin on drums.

The production reflects this “back to basics” ethos. Much like the early days of the band, the tracks began as raw demos in Grohl’s home studio before the rest of the lineup layered their contributions. The result? A 37-minute, 10-track sprint that feels leaner and more urgent than their recent experimental formats.

An Easter Monday Special: The Dublin Church Sessions

In a move that celebrates the band’s intimate side, fans can stream the Foo Fighters’ February 22 performance at St. James’ Church in Dingle, Ireland, on Easter Monday (April 6). Recorded for the legendary Other Voices series Other Voices series, the set featured a temporary lineup change with Jason Falkner stepping in for an injured Pat Smear.

The setlist was a masterclass in dynamic range, blending new cuts like “Of All People” with legendary anthems. Notably, the band paid homage to rock history during the set, weaving Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak” into the title track and honoring Lemmy with a “No Son of Mine” / “Ace of Spades” mashup.
