Following his tradition of lunar-cycle releases, Peter Gabriel delivers the third taste of his highly anticipated 2026 album, o/i. The new track, titled “What Lies Ahead,” debuts in its “Bright-Side Mix” by the legendary Mark “Spike” Stent. Originally teased as an instrumental work-in-progress during the Back to Front tour, the song finally finds its voice, evolving from a simple melody composed by Gabriel’s son, Isaac.
The Deep Connection Between Engineering and ‘What Lies Ahead’
Gabriel draws direct inspiration from his father’s life as an electrical engineer and inventor. He reflects on the inherent frustrations of the creative process—not just the trial and error of bringing an idea to life, but the grueling task of selling that vision to the world. By focusing on the “inventor’s struggle,” Gabriel creates a narrative that mirrors his own meticulous approach to music production.
The track features a haunting cello line recorded by Linnea Olsson during a past tour, later enriched by John Metcalfe’s orchestral arrangements in 2022. However, the most striking element remains the opening: the Swedish choir Orphei Drängar. Gabriel credits Brian Eno for suggesting the choir’s inclusion, noting that their presence creates a “powerful and emotionally strong” atmosphere that transports the listener into another dimension from the first second.
A Visual Dialogue with Feminist Art
Continuing his commitment to pairing music with fine art, Gabriel selected Birth Tear / Tear by iconic American feminist artist Judy Chicago to represent the single. The artwork depicts the raw intensity of childbirth—a theme Gabriel finds deeply metaphorical for the act of creation itself.
While the 2026 release of o/i remains on the horizon, “What Lies Ahead” proves that Peter Gabriel is still operating at the peak of his conceptual powers. He bridges the gap between the technical and the spiritual, proving once again that his music is as much about the process as it is about the final sound.
