Dot Rotten, Grime Pioneer and Visionary Producer, Dies at 37

"A True GOAT": Wiley, Lady Leshurr, and the Grime Scene Pay Tribute to the Late Dot Rotten

The UK music scene mourns the loss of a foundational architect. Family members confirmed to the BBC that Dot Rotten, born Joseph Ellis, has passed away at the age of 37. Reports suggest the artist died in Gambia, leaving behind a sprawling legacy that bridged the gap between underground grime and mainstream pop.

The Architect of the ‘Rotten Riddims’

A Stockwell native, Ellis began his journey at just seven years old, crafting beats on an Atari system. He rose to prominence under the name Young Dot before evolving into Dot Rotten—an acronym for “Dirty on Tracks, Righteous Opinions Told to Educate Nubians.”

He didn’t just participate in the grime scene; he accelerated it. In 2008 alone, he released six volumes of his Rotten Riddims series in a single month. These instrumentals set a new benchmark for production, with tracks like “XCXD BXMB” later providing the backbone for hits by AJ Tracey and Kano.

From Underground Battles to Chart Success

While his “war of words” with icons like Wiley and P Money solidified his reputation as a fearsome lyricist, Ellis possessed a rare melodic sensibility. In 2012, he achieved mainstream success with the Top 20 hit “Overload.” The track, which sampled Robert Miles, served as a raw, vulnerable exploration of his struggles with depression.

His versatility led to high-profile collaborations with:

  • Ed Sheeran (“Goodbye to You”)

  • Cher Lloyd (“Dub on the Track”)

  • Kano (“Garageskankfreestyle” – Producer)

  • Nines (“I See You Shining” – Co-producer)

A Legacy Under Many Names

In later years, Ellis moved behind the scenes, adopting the moniker Zeph Ellis to produce for heavyweights like Headie One and D-Block Europe. Shortly before his death, he returned to the Dot Rotten name for the single “Psalms for Praize,” a track that reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to his craft.

The Scene Pays Tribute

Tributes continue to pour in from across the industry. Lady Leshurr labeled him a “GOAT,” while DJ Logan Sama noted that Ellis “never received the accolades or rewards for his craft that it deserved.” Even his former rival Wiley paid respect, sharing a dove emoji alongside one of the producer’s classic instrumentals.

Joseph Ellis remains a rare example of an artist who remained “grounded and balanced” while possessing enough talent to reshape an entire genre from his bedroom.
