Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr Drop Their First-Ever Duet!

A Beatle Reunion: Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr Reunite for First-Ever Duet "Home to Us"

History has a funny way of coming full circle. In 1962, a young Ringo Starr was famously whisked away in Brian Epstein’s luxury car to play his first lunchtime show at the Cavern Club. Now, over sixty years later, the two surviving members of the Fab Four have delivered something fans have waited decades for: a true vocal duet.

“Home to Us,” the second single from McCartney’s highly anticipated album The Boys of Dungeon Lane (set for release on May 29), is more than just a collaboration; it is a sonic love letter to their shared roots in Liverpool. While the pair have appeared on each other’s records many times, this marks the first time they have traded verses as a formal duo. Featuring the steady, unmistakable drumming of Ringo and a production polish by Andrew Watt, the track feels like a warm, nostalgic embrace of the past.

From Dingle to the World: The Story Behind the Song

A Tribute to Liverpool Origins

The narrative of “Home to Us” centers on the gritty reality of growing up in post-war Liverpool. McCartney’s lyrics paint a picture of a “dilapidated” but beloved childhood, specifically referencing Ringo’s upbringing in the Dingle area—a neighborhood Paul describes as “well hard.”

“You come from nothing and you build yourself up,” McCartney reflected. “Ringo used to get mugged coming home from work. Even though it was crazy, it was home to us.”

The song captures this “poor-but-beautiful” sentiment perfectly. McCartney sings the first verse, Starr takes the second, and their voices merge in a chorus that emphasizes that while the world around them was falling apart, the city they were born in was their entire universe.

The Collaboration Process

Interestingly, the duet almost didn’t happen. Initially, Paul simply asked Ringo to contribute drums. After writing a track specifically with Ringo in mind, Paul sent it over, but Ringo only added a few lines to the chorus. It took a phone call from Paul to convince his old friend to take a starring role. To add even more texture to the track, rock royalty Chrissie Hynde and Sharleen Spiteri (Texas) provided soulful backing vocals, creating a rich, multi-generational sound.

Lyrics:

The place we used to live in
You could say it wasn’t much
But it was home to us
And you could be forgiven
If you thought that it was rough
But it was home to us
The roses in the yard began to wilt
And then they turned to dust
But it was home to us

We didn’t worry where the road was going to take us to
There wasn’t time to make a fuss ‘cause that was all we knew
The world around us wasn’t safe
The place was falling down
But it was my hometown
And it was home to us

The lady on the hill was drinking brandy
Eating caviar the perfect host
My mum was in the kitchen washing dishes in the sink
And then she burnt the toast
The kids are in the alley playing ball
Until the sun goes down
But that was my hometown
And it was home to us

(We didn’t worry where the road was going to lead us to)
There wasn’t time to make a fuss ‘cause that was all we knew
(The world around us wasn’t safe)
The place was falling down
But that was my hometown
And it was all I knew
‘Cause it was home to us

The place we used to play
Was in the middle of the street
But it was home to us
And when the skies were grey
It didn’t matter anyway
But it was home to us
The roses in the yard began to wilt
And then they turned to dust
But it was home to us
Yeah it was home to us
Yeah it was home to us
