Music visionary Peter Gabriel continues his methodical journey toward his 2026 album, o\i, with the release of his latest track, “Till Your Mind Is Shining.” While his previous work on the acclaimed i/o explored vast sonic landscapes, Gabriel describes this new entry as perhaps his most “pop” endeavor to date.
The release follows his signature lunar-cycle-inspired pattern, debuting today with the Dark-Side Mix by the legendary Tchad Blake. For those seeking a different frequency, the Bright-Side Mix by Mark “Spike” Stent is scheduled for release later this April.
A Return to Pre-Genesis Roots
In a move that will fascinate long-time fans, Gabriel revealed that the playful chord sequences of this track reconnected him to his earliest days—even before the formation of Genesis.
“It takes me back to school days,” Gabriel reflected. “Before Genesis, we were trying to be songwriters rather than musicians—writing pop or soul/R&B songs. This track reconnects me to those roots, trying to improve on what I was working on back then.”
Despite the vintage inspiration, the track underwent Gabriel’s famously meticulous “maturation” process. Some elements of the song date back several years, surviving his rigorous selection process because they still felt “alive.”
The Fusion of AI, Consciousness, and Art
Beyond the infectious rhythm, the song dives deep into Gabriel’s fascination with consciousness and the ethics of our era. The track explores the intersection of human empathy and the mechanical world of Artificial Intelligence.
To visualize this, Gabriel collaborated with artist Tatsuo Miyajima, selecting the piece Warp Time with Warp Self, No. 2. The artwork features a futuristic grid of numbers juxtaposed against a distorted human reflection—a nod to Gabriel’s recent conversations with Hiroshima survivors and his study of Buddhist thought.
“There is an interaction between the human being and the mechanical world of AI we are creating,” Gabriel says. “It’s about opening the mind to understand ourselves better so we can react with more compassion.”
