Apple Music Enters the AI Era: New Labels to Identify Synthetic Tracks

In a significant move toward digital transparency, Apple Music has officially announced it will begin labeling tracks created using artificial intelligence. As the music industry grapples with the explosion of AI-generated content, the streaming giant is implementing a specialized tagging system to inform listeners exactly what they are hearing—and seeing.

The Four Pillars of AI Tagging

According to a newsletter reported by Music Business Worldwide, Apple Music will utilize four distinct labels to categorize AI involvement. These tags will appear if AI was used in any of the following areas:

Recording: Vocal synthesis or instrumental generation.

Composition: AI-assisted songwriting or arrangement.

Artwork: Visuals generated for album covers.

Music Video: AI-driven video production or deepfakes.

The Self-Certification Loophole

While the move is a “first step” in providing the industry with data to develop thoughtful AI policies, there is a catch: transparency is voluntary. Apple Music will only apply these labels if record labels and distributors explicitly declare the use of AI within the track’s metadata. This “self-certification” model has already sparked debate among transparency advocates, as it places the burden of honesty on the creators themselves rather than using automated detection tools.

Apple vs. Deezer: Two Paths to Transparency

Apple’s approach stands in stark contrast to other industry players. While Apple relies on metadata, the French platform Deezer is actively developing proprietary technology to scan and identify AI usage automatically. With over 60,000 tracks uploaded to streaming services daily, the battle between manual reporting and automated detection will likely define the streaming landscape in 2026.

For Apple, these labels serve as a foundation for future policy, signaling to the industry that the “black box” of AI creation is finally being opened—even if the lid is currently left to the labels to lift.
